Exploring Lake Havasu’s Ecology: Kids’ Educational Boat Ride Aboard the Dixie Belle, Supported by Supercat Fest West

On a sunlit morning at Lake Havasu on April 20th, children’s laughter echoed over the water as they embarked on their first-ever boat ride aboard the Dixie Belle. Supercat Fest West’s sponsorship made this invaluable opportunity possible, supporting Kids on the Colorado’s educational initiative to teach local children about the lake’s ecology and history.

The enthusiasm was palpable among the young participants. “I’ve got kids asking questions, getting involved, and interacting,” said Dan Delasantos, president of Kids on the Colorado River. Highlighting the surprising knowledge gaps that these programs aim to fill: “We created the programs because we found out the kids didn’t know California is on the other side of the river, and they didn’t know that it was a reservation. They’ve never been on the water before, and they were born and raised here.” Thanks to sponsors like Supercat Fest West, children of Lake Havasu experienced the beautiful waters and excitement from the boat tour–sparking their curiosity and strengthening their bond with the natural environment.

Community Support and Collaboration for the Kids

The 9 am tour catered specifically to children with special needs, offering a safe and enriching experience. Meanwhile, the 1 pm tour welcomed the general public. Safe docking and anchoring were provided by The Riviera. Additionally, the Lake Havasu Boat Patrol ensured smooth sailing throughout the event. Board member Jeanette Nangreeves of Kids on the Colorado volunteered at the event today as a way of saying thank you for Supercat Fest West. She shared that, “the sponsorship and support from Supercat Fest West allowed us to expand and reach more kids.” It’s important to reach out to underprivileged youth in the community who might not otherwise get these opportunities.

Looking Ahead: Community Day at Lake Havasu City Aquatic Center

On May 5, the Lake Havasu City Aquatic Center will host a Community Day, offering more opportunities. This event will provide children in the community with active, interesting, and entertaining summer and school-year activities. All local families and community members can attend. Additionally, businesses and nonprofits that provide youth services should collaborate with Kids on the Colorado for this special event.
